Dean wakes up in the middle of the night to quiet sniffling noises from next to him in bed. Little five year old Sam is crying, the glistening tears on his cheeks sparkling in the moonlight. Dean frowns, scooting over to Sam’s side of the bed and wraps a comforting arm around the younger boy’s waist. He rustles his hand through Sam’s hair.

“What’s wrong Sammy?” Dean whispers and Sam shakes his head vigorously, murmuring something about “nightmares.”

Dean nods against Sam’s shoulder, continuing to card his fingers through his little brother’s shaggy hair. 

“It’s okay Sammy, it wasn’t real. It was just a dream.”

Sam frowns, reaching up with his chubby little fingers and wiping the tears off of his cheek.

“But it felt real, Dean. It was a monster and it had big scary teeth and claws!” Sam whispers fearfully, turning his his big brown eyes to Dean, all wide and scared.

“I’m sure it did, but you were dreaming, that’s all,” Dean consoles with a small comforting smile.

“Okay,” Sam consents, still sniffling. “Can you hold me until I fall asleep?” Sam asks.

 ”Of course, Sammy,” Dean answers, curling his arm further around Sam’s waist.

“Thanks, Dean,” Sam mumbles, eyes sliding shut and nuzzling back against Dean. 

Dean holds Sam until the younger boy’s breath turns even and deep as he drifts back off to sleep. Dean tries to move away, to get back to his side of the bed, but Sam, in his sleep clings to Dean’s arms with his fingers. Dean sighs and snuggles back up against Sam. 

“Night Sammy,” Dean whispers, before closing his eyes and letting sleep overtake him.
